New ‘legal high’ causes concern

A new drug called ‘Ivory Wave’ is causing concern as reports come in of dozens of people being treated in hospital for psychosis after using it.  Available from the internet and marketed as bath salts, it costs just £15 a packet and is said to be three times stronger than cocaine.  However, newspapers are mistakenly reporting it as a ‘legal high’ when in fact the active ingredient found in some samples, MDPV (Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (3,4-methylenedioxy)) is a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, April 2010.
