Downward trend in young people’s drinking, smoking and drug use continues

The latest ‘Smoking, drinking and drug use among young people in England’ report is out and 2012 saw a further reduction in the number of young people engaging in these activities.  However, there is a worrying increase in the use of legal highs which needs to be addressed.   Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is now the second most popular drug after cannabis and discarded cannisters are littering some suburbs.  A recent article in the Guardian reports that butane (lighter fluid) inhalation is claiming the lives of 40 people per year.

Rising numbers hospitalised by cannabis

The number of people admitted to hospital for mental or behavioural issues because of cannabis rose from 651 to 1,003 between 2008/9 and 20011/12.  Not surprising given that ‘Skunk’, the most commonly used form, is 8-23 times as strong as the cannabis that was smoked in the 60’s and 70’s.  (Addiction Today)
