Legal highs in the news again

Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that death rates from drugs continue to decline overall, which is great news (although Britain still has the worst drug problem in Europe).

However, the number of deaths from legal highs has nearly doubled – from 29 in 2011 to 52 in 2012.  These numbers are a tiny proportion of the total population, but they take no account of physical and mental health problems resulting from the use of unregulated legal highs whose composition is uncertain and effects unpredictable.  They are readily available from so called ‘head shops’ and the internet.  A recent report by the Centre for Social Justice found that one in twelve young people has admitted taking legal highs.
