Hope UK

Conference 2008 067Worship is expressed in different ways but, allied with prayer and teaching in a service, it can be a very appropriate opportunity to focus on alcohol and other drug issues.

We can celebrate life and pray for good health. We can consider Biblical viewpoints about lifestyle and support those who are called to a ministry of prevention, counselling or care.

Testimonies

It may be helpful to introduce testimonies or use extracts from books to show that God works powerfully in the lives of dependent people who call on Him.

Caution: Whilst it is good to praise God for the recovery of dependent people, remember that this can be a long-term and frustrating journey. The use of testimonies should not suggest that everybody recovers or that it is an easy process.

Visiting Speakers

Visiting speakers raise awareness by bringing in outside experience. Sometimes a visitor may be able to say something more directly than a pastor who is regularly preaching to the congregation. Visitors could be used for the main address in a church service or to participate in another way such as giving their testimony. Hope UK is able to provide speakers for ‘deputation’ or for a more general approach to alcohol and drug awareness.

Hospitality

Many churches serve refreshments on Sundays. Why not consider alcohol-free drinks to go alongside tea and coffee?

Social Issues

An increasing number of churches are exploring the interaction between Christian faith and social issues. While some may make this an occasional feature of a mid-week programme, others have decided to set aside their regular Sunday evening service time for a seminar-type approach.
