Most young people have an extensive network of friends and acquaintances, even more so now that social media is a part of virtually every teenager’s life.  Hope UK’s peer mentors will learn how to be positive role models in the context of existing friendship groups, able not only to informally promote the benefits of drug and alcohol-free lifestyles, but demonstrate it by their own example.

Their Hope UK training will given them a basic understanding of the various drugs and their effects, both legal and illegal.  They will also be taught good social and communication skills that will stand them in good stead in every other area of their lives.  The training will enable them to assist adult volunteers in leading the ‘Drugs, Sex and You’ 8-week course.

Peer mentors will be encouraged to support each other, and our experience of training adults as Drug Educators leads us to expect that solid friendships will be made that will help to affirm them in their own lifestyle choices.
